Dear Children

As Mr Pygott has already told you, Grumpy and I have ridden Bertie up to the Arctic Circle in Alaska.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA From the bottom of the world to the Arctic Circle we have ridden 40,000km which is like riding from Church Stretton to Shrewsbury and back about 1,000 times. So quite a lot.

The United States is made up of 50 states and Alaska is known as the 49th state and is the biggest state of all. Not too many people live there and it is a long way between towns and villages. The Arctic Circle passes through Alaska. It is an imaginary line around the world. Above it the days in the summer are very long and in one place called Barrow the sun doesn’t set for 84 days of the year. Imagine having no night time. When Grumpy and I reached the Arctic Circle the days were very long but not quite like that. It rained a lot and there was snow too. We rode Bertie above the Arctic Circle and then it was time to turn round to head home.

On the way back we went to a place called Valdez OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAand watched the fishermen bringing in their fish to clean. They were king salmon and Copper River Red salmon. Some were very big, weighing about 14kg so lots of fish to eat. We were also lucky to see 2 grizzly bears walking along the side of the road and a mummy moose with her young one called a calf.

On our way back we made a very important stop at North Pole where Santa has a house. There is a very big Santa outside so we knew we had the right house. Inside his house it was OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAlike Christmas. Bertie needed a rest and so did we after riding for such a long way so we took a very special ferry. It took 4 days and we saw some whales and some dolphins swimming not far from us.

Now we are in Seattle which is in Washington State. It is very nice and there is lots to see. Grumpy and I went up a big tower called the Space Needle. I was a bit scared going up in the lift but Grumpy held my hand. You could see all the way to the mountains from the top.DSC03079a This weekend Grumpy and I will fly home as our long journey this time has come to an end. Bertie will have to go on another ship to come home to England. It will take a couple of weeks and we will miss riding him. So we hope to see you all very soon.
